The British Journal of Photography’s feature on the new San Francisco Museum of Modern Art focuses primarily on its new photography inclusions. This gallery ties closely to other galleries in the museum which feature art specifically from California. These exhibits will include art pieces on loan to the museum from Thomas Weisel’s collection. The museum celebrates California-based artists and California-based donors and collectors with these new exhibits.

The Mercury News offers one visitor’s impressions of the newly-opened SFMOMA. The new museum will include exhibits called “Open Ended: Painting and Sculpture Since 1900,” as well as several California-focused exhibits. Pieces loaned from Thomas Weisel’s collection will be housed in several of the California exhibits, contributing to SFMOMA’s appreciation for local and locally historical art.

The New York Times’ review of the new San Francisco Museum of Modern Art praises its potential positive influence on the museums of the future. SFMOMA, which just opened its doors this week after several years of construction offers ten stories of new galleries and exhibits. Roberta Smith, the reviewer, shares statistics about the new museum space and also writes that “the main promised gift here, a large 1953 triptych by the abstract painter Lee Mullican, is a knockout.” That piece comes from the collection of Thom Weisel and family.

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art will reopen on May 14, 2016 after being closed for three years while a new space was created to house 4,000 new works in 460,000 square feet. Mr. Weisel was involved in the planning for SFMOMA’s expansion project, as well as the museum’s highly anticipated reopening, through his involvement in the Executive Committee, Campaign Finance Committee, Tech Committee, and as the Chair of the Committee of Trustees.
